mocaken

A program to study and experiment in order for the museum to make more changes. Workshops and open study sessions will be held. We will create opportunities for museum staff and participants to learn and think together with researchers and artists about methods and perspectives to make the museum a place where all people can become familiar with art expression in peace.

About Pictograms

For the renewal of the museum in 2023, a new pictogram was created by combining the shapes of the building designed by architect Kurokawa Kisho. We tried to create pictograms that did not depend on the conventional stereotypes of "female" and "male" to represent people, but we received some comments that they were difficult to understand. In the first session of mocaken, we will use this issue of pictograms at the museum as a starting point for a study session and roundtable discussion to learn about the various issues and research trends facing pictograms and to share opinions. (Programs are conducted in Japanese)

About Bodies

Each of us has a different body, and our experiences and ways of feeling are shaped by factors such as age, physical characteristics, and the cultures we have grown up with. Learning about these differences not only helps us understand the barriers that may exist between people and art museums and how we can enjoy museums together, but also offers us the opportunity to imagine others and perceive the world from different perspectives. We plan to hold study sessions and workshops with artists and experts on topics such as how people with visual impairments perceive the world, Deaf culture, the unique ways in which individuals with developmental or neurological differences see and interpret things, and the differences in perception and thinking across languages.

As a concurrent related exhibition, Touch, Untangle, Tones! (September 27, 2025 – January 12, 2026) will be held, attempting to explore communication beyond words—between entities with different backgrounds—through the artists’ works. (Programs are conducted in Japanese)
