In observing the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is holding a trilogy of exhibitions examining Hiroshima from three perspectives—its past as a city destroyed by an atomic bomb, its path of reconstruction, and its present and future.

In August, seventy years ago in Hiroshima, photographs taken from high elevations revealed the extent of the city’s devastation by an atomic bomb. The “bird’s-eye view” plan designed thereafter by architect Kenzo Tange, which included Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, expressed a clear future vision for Hiroshima as a city symbolic of peace. This exhibition takes two Hiroshimas seen from the sky—the city in devastation and in reconstruction—as a point of departure in examining artworks that look comprehensively from a “bird’s-eye view” on cities and places in order to ponder their past and present.
When we look down from a high elevation on a place or things normally seen from eye level, aspects we never noticed come into view and we see an overall picture of that place or thing. Today—a time of chaos and anxiety about the future—we need more than ever to take a “bird’s-eye view,” for only with an overall grasp of our situation can we discover the proper direction in which to proceed.
