Screening of Gordon Matta-Clark

2026.2.14(Sat) — 6.7(Sun)

In conjunction with Collection Exhibition 2025-III, we present screenings of video works by Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978). Matta-Clark studied architecture at Cornell University and later engaged with literature and contemporary thought at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he was deeply influenced by deconstructive philosophy. In the 1970s he was based in New York and became known for his “building cuts,” bold interventions in structures slated for demolition. Through these works, he questioned the very foundations of urban space and social systems.
The work Splitting (1974) involved cutting through the walls of a suburban house, exposing the boundary between inside and outside and revealing the fragility of everyday living space. Conical Intersect (1975) was created by carving a conical incision into historic buildings in Paris, making visible both memory and disappearance amid urban redevelopment. These videos are not mere records but critical artistic practices that use architecture as material, aligning with the lineage of “anti-art” that follows Marcel Duchamp.
One of the themes of Collection Exhibition 2025-III is “Destruction of Art,” which views the act of questioning and dismantling existing values and forms of expression as a fundamental artistic impulse. Matta-Clark’s practice embodies this idea: through acts of dismantling, he reexamined the structures of urban space and social systems, opening up new possibilities for creation and offering fresh perspectives on our perception and thought.
