Saunas have become an enduring trend in Japan, but their origins go back some 2,000 years to Finland. In Finnish folklore, it was believed that welcoming the spirit that dwells in the sauna would bring prosperity to the household—a tradition that continues to this day. Saunas have also established themselves as social spaces and remain an essential part of Finnish life and culture. This exhibition explores the history and culture behind saunas while highlighting the connection between Nordic designers, including Alvar Aalto, and sauna culture.
