Work Description
Hamada went to China as a Japanese infantryman and served until the end of World War II. After returning home, he drew on his own experiences to depict the absurdity and tragedy of war and the dark side of humanity in etchings. This work, produced near the end of the Cold War, depicts three figures trying in turn to press buttons and a mushroom cloud. The one on the far left, with a sack over his head, has no way of knowing what is going on around him, and probably does not even know what button he is about to push. Commissioned on the theme of “Hiroshima,” this work hints at the mechanics of nuclear war that can be caused by a few powerful individuals.
