Work Description
Shiraga was a key member of the avant-garde art group Gutai, formed in the Kansai region of western Honshu after World War II. His unique technique of “foot painting,” by swinging from a rope suspended from the ceiling and sliding his bare feet across a paint-laden canvas lying on the floor, won him international acclaim. This commissioned work on the theme of “Hiroshima” was painted in a similar manner, and the trajectories of actions can be seen in the vigorously splashed paint on its surface. However, with its palette limited to black, the work makes a somewhat different impression from other foot paintings characterized by clashing colors and passionate physicality.
