Work Description
Suwa lived for two years in Spain, where he embarked on a career as a painter. After returning to Japan, he produced a work based on observation of the avant-garde dancer Kazuo Ohno, and began to create works based on thorough observations as well as dialogues with subjects and investigations of materials. This work focuses on the artist’s grandmother, who died in the former Manchuria just after Japan’s defeat in World War II. Based on field interviews and medical knowledge, the artist depicted vestiges of starvation and infectious diseases experienced by people at that time on a healthy, nude human figure, as if to re-enact what had happened to his grandmother. He continues to question how far the “seeing” of events that have not been experienced can be extended to non-participants in the absence of a narrator.
