Work Description

Born in Lebanon to Palestinian parents, the artist was unable to return home due to the Lebanese Civil War, which broke out while she was on a trip to the UK, and remained in the UK to study art. This work, a map of the world laser-engraved on glossy velvet fabric, deals with the cartographic problem of projection, i.e. how to represent the spherical earth on a flat surface. This map is a Peters projection, which brings the continents closer to their actual sizes and is intended to treat all parts of the world fairly, unlike the Eurocentric world maps we are used to seeing.
