Title
The Stars of New York
Artist
Miran FUKUDA
Year

Fukuda has continually pushed the boundaries of pictorial expression, altering well-known paintings from her own unique perspective in styles that disrupt the viewer’s preconceived notions. Many of her works deal with social themes, and this work, depicting a night view of New York City, is based on the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US. In this image, the windows of the Twin Towers have been cut out so their lights appear to be extinguished, and these lights have become stars scattered across the sky. The artist expresses her hope that through painting it is possible to convey not only the reality of unimaginable tragedy, but also a sense of optimism toward the future.
