Work Description
Kai, a Hiroshima native who lives and works in France, initiated the Bury series in 1981 in an endeavor to create works of art that capture the processes of the natural world in unaltered form. By burying his works in the ground, he not only transfers the color of the soil to the canvas, but also presents the viewer with holes eaten away by small creatures in the soil and traces of decomposition caused by microorganisms. The canvas used for this work was buried in the ground near Paris for about three months starting on August 6, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing. Having been commissioned to create a work on the theme of “Hiroshima,” the artist says that he expressed his prayers for peace by “collaborating with the Earth.”
