Work Description

When the French-born Klein was in Japan to learn judo, he was significantly influenced by the handprints of sumo wrestlers, fish rubbings, and human shadows imprinted by the heat rays of the atomic bomb. The Rosicrucian concept that the color blue symbolizes the spirit also resonated with him, and many of his works feature the distinctive shade of deep blue that he later named International Klein Blue (IKB). In the Anthropometrie series, people’s bodies coated with IKB were pressed onto paper spread out on the floor, or sprayed with paint, in a manner similar to making rubbings of the human body, directly capturing physical movement on the works’ surface. This work is one of the few in the series with the imprint of a male body. It is believed to be a self-portrait, which the artist sent as a token of friendship to the composer Louis Saguer.
