In conjunction with the exhibition Collection Exhibition 2026-Ⅱ, we are pleased to present When I was 11... (in Hiroshima) by Komori Haruka + Seo Natsumi + Project members. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Komori Haruka + Seo Natsumi have visited areas affected by catastrophes, including natural disasters and war, recording the stories of the people and the landscapes they inhabit. Through their work, they have come to believe that experiences at around age 11 can leave a lasting mark on a person’s life.
When I was 11... (in Hiroshima) is a project by Komori Haruka + Seo Natsumi, carried out in collaboration with workshop participants as an effort to preserve and pass on the memories of individuals living in present-day Hiroshima. Launched in connection with an exhibition at the museum in 2023, the project has conducted interviews with approximately 40 residents of Hiroshima, ranging in age from teenagers to people in their nineties, and the project is still ongoing. As intergenerational personal stories come together, layered and collective regional histories begin to emerge.

Komori Haruka + Seo Natsumi

An art unit formed by Komori Haruka and Seo Natsumi. They started their activities after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and moved and worked in Rikuzentakata City for 3 years from 2012. In 2015, they established NOOK, a general incorporated association, in Sendai to document the Tohoku region in collaboration with our friends working in the region.
