Work Description

Filmed in the US state of New Mexico, this piece consists of 26 portraits of local residents and two films focused on a young Iranian art student. Neshat, who was born in Iran and is a longtime resident of the US, has created a work that depicts, through narratives of the dreams of residents, the gap between the ideals of America as a land of dreams and the realities of discrimination, prejudice, and poverty that became starkly apparent during the Trump presidency, as well as the absurdity and peril of the political ideologies and nuclear policies of both the US and Iran. A scene in which a former military man speaks about the nightmare of a nuclear holocaust features the words of a Hiroshima bombing survivor.
