Work Description
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Miyazaki moved to Tokyo with the intention of becoming a painter, but was drafted a few years later and assigned to the 2nd Hiroshima Western Army, serving in the Soviet-Manchurian Border Defense Force. After World War II the artist became a prisoner of war in the former USSR, and during four years of internment in Siberia, he painted using jute bags, used to carry grain and beans in the camps, in place of canvases. After repatriation to Japan, he drew attention with the Traveling Performers series based on his experiences as an embedded photographer, while also continuing to deal with the subject of his experiences in Siberia. Memories of this land where he had survived such harsh conditions became a source of inspiration for his work. The crimson surface of this work, created by overlaying coarse, rugged jute, evokes both the war-torn earth and fertile land filled with new life and vigor.
