Work Description

A young girl stands alone, her lips pursed and the pupils of her left and right eyes not matching. Subjects such as girls and dogs appear in many of Nara’s diverse works, which include paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and ceramics. While these familiar subjects give the works an approachable quality, they are represented as small beings in weak, vulnerable positions. The “Boy” in the title refers to “Little Boy,” the code name of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and the flash of the bomb’s detonation is reflected in the girl’s right eye. The image of the young girl, staring at the viewer with no clear emotion, makes us aware of her relationship to the “boy,” associated with nuclear weapons, as well as the presence of the “adult” in opposition to the child.
