Work Description
Hidaka has consistently made trees the subject of her work, using Japanese art materials and techniques without being bound by traditional styles. Her paintings are characterized by monochromatic but varied tones, created by affixing multiple layers of mineral pigment to the surface, and by painstaking attention to detail. The trees, depicted as if seen from directly below, convey the distance from the sky beyond through their branches and leaf tips. The artist’s interest in the space between trees and sky, which has gradually evolved as reflected in titles such as Looking Up the Trees; From the Space of Trees; and Distance from the Sky, is in this series directed toward the space between the trees and the sky above.
