Work Description

Working with intense imagery such as nubile young girls, the erotic-grotesque, and war paintings, Aida has also produced works that deal critically with society, institutions, and history. He works in media ranging from painting to video, photography, sculpture, manga, and novels. The nonsensical content of this work involves cutting down plants in the wilderness to create squares, paving them with asphalt, and inscribing the kanji character for “human” on them. In contrast to land art, in which projects are carried out in natural environments with a concern for ecology, this work shows how all human actions affect the natural environment in some way. An ironic stance toward Western values on the part of the artist, who has consistently worked in and focused on Japan, can be seen in this work.
