Work Description

Born in Taiwan before World War II, Tada grew up in Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul) and studied oil painting at a Japanese university. After graduation she became a self-taught sculptor, using stainless steel, acrylic, glass, and other materials that were new at the time to create abstract forms which reflect light and the surrounding scenery. The artist did not limit her work to sculpture, but also established her own research facility and was involved in numerous projects in public spaces, including lighting design and reliefs. When commissioned to produce this work on the theme of Hiroshima, she spoke about the difficulty of giving form to the impact the vista of Hiroshima made on her after repatriation to Japan. Her sculpture is intended to be integrated into the environment, and rather than symbolizing something on its own, to reflect the scenery of present-day Hiroshima.
