Work Description
Nishi was born in Hiroshima and embarked on his art career in earnest in the early 1980s, becoming known for conceptual sculptures made primarily with iron and bronze. This work consists of a series of bronzes, cast from bridges, roads, and stone monuments in Hiroshima, which were buried in the ground for a certain period of time and then excavated. The surfaces are covered with verdigris, and soil and sand still cling to them. While engaging with the history of life and death related to the atomic bombings, the work is also deeply involved with the processes of nature, investigating the manner in which “sculpture” is produced.
