Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness(for Hiroshima)
Artist
Alfredo JAAR
Year
1995
Material
lightbox, color transparency, mirror etc.

Work Description

Jaar, who was born in Chile and later relocated to New York, has addressed various social issues through exhibitions in public spaces and installations involving photography, video, and architectural handling of space. In this work, a light box illuminates a photograph of a floating lantern ceremony held on a river in Hiroshima on the evening of August 6. Meanwhile, a mirror on the wall behind the light box reflects the title of Kenzaburo Oe’s short story collection Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness and the image of a young girl playing a violin. The artist evidently believes that it is the children who are the future, and who can show the world how to survive the nuclear age.
