Work Description
Having experienced visual and auditory hallucinations since childhood, Kusama began making paintings with polka-dot and net patterns as a means of alleviating her suffering. In 1957 she moved to the US, where she exhibited enormous two-dimensional works, soft sculptures made with fabric, and installations incorporating mirrors. In the late 1960s, she engaged in happenings including body painting events and antiwar protests. For the artist, the creative process is in part a battle against the visions and compulsions that continue to assail her. This commissioned work on the theme of “Hiroshima” is based on the idea that souls of those who perished in the atomic bombing have arisen from the ground and reside in the hearts of those still living.
