Work Description

Yun, who was born in Korea, was forced to withdraw from art school when the Korean War broke out after he enrolled, but resumed his studies about seven years later. In the 1970s he began work on the Umber series, named for the color of the paint he used. The artist described this shade of brown as the color of “earth and water.” Using a technique of soaking thin layers of diluted paint into nearly unprimed canvas, he was a leading figure in the Dansaekhwa (lit. “Monochrome Painting”) movement that flourished in South Korea. This work, commissioned on the theme of Hiroshima, represents the black rain that fell on the land after the atomic bombing.
