Title
Red and Brown Work by Ochre for Hiroshima
Artist
Kosho ITO
Year

In his mid-teens Ito became the apprentice of a Kutani ware potter and mastered traditional ceramic techniques, but he eventually became skeptical about the artificiality of human-made forms and subsequently developed his own unique style, using clay as his main material, which occupies the border between the artificial and the natural. This work consists of yellow clay units fired in paper boxes and laid as if paving a rectangular floor. The clay contains Hiroshima oyster shells and soil from the city of Hiroshima. The ochre presents diverse textures and various hues of red and brown produced by different firing temperatures, with some retaining block forms while others have been almost completely burnt into oblivion. The scene arrayed at one’s feet is reminiscent of the soil of Hiroshima, which was once exposed to scorching heat.
