Work Description
Ay-O is known for works featuring strata of all colors of the rainbow that take a variety of forms, including paintings and sculptures. Born in Ibaraki Prefecture, he moved to New York in 1958 and joined the avant-garde art movement Fluxus. His works, including installations incorporating perceptions of the human senses and aspects of the surrounding environment, were noted for their groundbreaking qualities. This work, commissioned by this museum on the theme of “Hiroshima,” is based on nine Q’s, which are propositions to fulfill the conditions of the commission’s theme, posed by the artist himself. The work embodies his approach of working not with abstraction, but with specific objects in his immediate environment.
