Work Description

Park, an artist from South Korea, is known as a leading figure in the 1970s Korean art movement Dansaekhwa (lit. “Monochrome Painting ”). His series Ecriture (also the title of this work) was initiated in 1967, and evolved from early works in which a single color of paint was applied to canvas and line drawings were made in pencil before the paint dried, to three-dimensional expression featuring undulating vertical lines on the surfaces of layers of hanji (Korean paper). This work, characterized by pitch-black, crisscrossing strokes, is what the artist described as a “Black Ash Requiem” for Hiroshima.
