Work Description

Green, a native of the UK, paints events from his own life, such as childhood memories and episodes from married life, in meticulous brushstrokes on distinctive shaped canvases. Here, the artist is depicted holding lotus leaves as he returns to his family. Because its flower closes at night and reopens in the morning, the lotus is said to symbolize rebirth. The circular shape at the top is reminiscent of the roof of the Atomic Bomb Dome, and at the same time resembles a shining sun. Having visited Hiroshima, which has been reconstructed with an abundance of greenery, he sought to present an “image of hope” in this work rather than emphasizing the city’s tragic aspects.
