Work Description

Born into a family of ikebana flower arrangement masters, Araki became the acting iemoto (head of the family) at a young age, while at the same time producing art and managing a gallery. In 1979, her triptych of works on the theme of the Bible won the Grand Prize at the 5th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. Inspired by a Bible found among the belongings of her brother, a Christian, after his death, Bible is an iconic series that the artist has continued to pursue throughout her career. While driven by personal, internal contemplation of familial and religious themes, it also depicts the intersection of Biblical apocalyptic imagery and the horrors of nuclear weapons in a universal manner.
