Work Description

After serving in World War II, the American artist Leon Golub returned to his hometown of Chicago and produced figurative paintings influenced by ancient art and mythology. After living in Europe for several years, he moved to New York City and became deeply involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement, creating for the first time a series of large-scale paintings dealing with real-life themes, entitled Vietnam. The figures arrayed on unstretched canvases are derived from newspaper and magazine photographs. Soldiers in various poses, seemingly oblivious to the victims lying at their feet, vividly reflect the cruel realities of daily life on the battlefield.
