Work Description

A native of the UK, Moore volunteered to serve in World War I and studied sculpture at art school after the war. From the beginning he was consistently interested in the forms of nature and the human body, and he prolifically produced works influenced by both “primitive” art and the abstract sculpture of his time. The starting point for this work was the human torso, as evidenced by a smaller preliminary model, Maquette for Large Torso: Arch, created in 1962. The body was then radically elongated to create an arch approximately six meters in height. Standing in the plaza of Hijiyama Park and welcoming numerous visitors, the work was cast in what was then West Germany and was transported to Hiroshima when the museum first opened its doors.
