Work Description

Inoue studied sculpture at university and lived and worked in Europe for about 20 years starting in the mid-1970s, gaining international acclaim for unique works that emphasize space and the experience of inhabiting it rather than objects themselves. my sky hole is his own English translation of a Japanese phrase, and he made it the title of a series that became his life’s work. Each work in the series functions as a mechanism for experiencing the universe with the body. This work is composed of two arc-shaped objects, which in the viewer’s imagination form a large sphere mostly buried in the ground. When viewers enter the imaginary sphere and look through holes in the object, they see the universe concentrated on the surface of a convex mirror, with themselves at the center of an image of heaven and earth.
