Work Description

The American artist Keith Haring rose to prominence in the early 1980s with impromptu drawings in New York City subway stations. In addition to opening Pop Shops that sold posters and original merchandise, he worked to reach a broad audience through murals and other media. This work, dealing with the life of Christ, features motifs found in traditional altarpieces rendered with the artist’s trademark bold and simple lines. Completed two weeks before his death at the age of 31 due to complications from AIDS, it was donated to the museum by Yoko Ono, a close friend of the artist.
