Since ancient times, birds have taken on a range of symbolic meanings in art, varying according to era and culture. Today, they remain associated with subjects such as movement, the crossing of borders, and prayer, and have taken on new significance. Passing freely back and forth, unbound by national borders or institutions, birds are an especially important subject now, when questions of movement and boundaries have come to the fore. This exhibition looks at the many representations of birds found in paintings, photographs, video, and related materials, drawing on the breadth of their symbolism and meaning to offer a fresh look at contemporary society.
