Trust in the power of human intellect

The 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a tragedy of the greatest magnitude that must never be repeated. Even now, sixty-six years later, many victims of the violence of atomic weapons are still suffering. Such is the gravity, and cruelty, of the destruction wrought on humanity by the A-bomb.

And now the tragedy of atom power is unfolding again, this time triggered by the forces of nature in the shape of the massive earthquake and tsunami of March 11.

Yet, remarkable advances in science and technology coupled with the efforts of millions, including you, will undoubtedly enable Japan to make a full recovery and one day rise again. And, what's more, have the intelligence and courage to build a new nation that has solved an environmental problem unprecedented elsewhere.

For this we can thank the amazing psychic and spiritual energy that emerges from the depths of our consciousness when disaster strikes; superpowers that can move mountains purely by the force of hope.

The time is coming for each of us, every member of the human race, to draw on those powers through the force of our intellect.

This is the message we must urgently convey from Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the youth of Japan, and all the people of the world.

Because this recent tragedy involving atomic power is not just Japan's problem, but that of every nation. While relying on our own resilience to make a new beginning, we Japanese also have an obligation to share that strength with the rest of the international community.

Now is the time to step up and demonstrate the power of human intellect, and our psychic energy, to save the world.
